Oral Health Related Quality-of-Life in Head-and-Neck Cancer Patients after Radiotherapy
Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe oral health status and health-related quality of life in head and neck cancer patients after radiotherapy Methods: The cross-sectional study using EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-H&N 35 questionnaires was performed on 188 head and neck cancer patients after radiotherapy treatment, follow up at Ho Chi Minh city Oncology Hospital from February 2015 to May 2015. Clinical examinations including dental caries and oral hygiene (OHI-S) were carried-out. Tooth was scored as caries when it presented cavity, fillled with caries (DMF index) or white spot lesion. The data was statistically processed using Epidata (3.1) and SPSS (22.0). Results: Percentage of new dental caries of head and neck cancer patients was 50%. In patients participating in Oral Care Program, the DT (Decayed Tooth) was 1.9, the MT (Missing Tooth) was 9.8. There was a significant difference compared with patients not participating the Program (DT=4.2, MT=16.5 respectively). Debris index is averagely 0.6 ± 0.7, calculus index is averagely 0.4 ± 0.6. Health-related quality of life: rating of a majority of functions (physical, role, cognitive, emotional, social functioning), drops in period 13-24 months after treatment, only physical function has regularly improved over time. Dry mouth and sticky saliva were leading items affecting life quality and remain at high level 2 years later with the mean score were 68 and 51 respectively. Conclusions: Oral health status of patients joining Oral Care Program is better than those not joining
