Carabelli Trait on Upper First Permanent Molars among Vietnamese Children

Objectives: Carabelli trait was the characteristic to distinguish between Mongoloid and Caucasoid races. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of Carabelli trait on upper first permanent molars among 12-14 –year-old Vietnamese children.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city (UMP) in year 2013. 64 pairs of dental casts from 64 Vietnamese children from 12 to 14 ages (32 boys, 32 girls) who participated the longitudinal research project from 3 year-old to 18 year-old regarding dentition-facial-cranial growth and development at the UMP were selected. Dahlberg’s classification (1956) was used to evaluate Carabelli trait by an calibrated investigator. Sexual dimorphism was statistically analyzed using Chi-square test.
Results: The prevalence of Carabelli trait was 64.06% of permanent first molars. There were no statistically significant difference in this figure between boys (62.50%) and girls (65.62%) (p=0.330). In addition, prevalence of pit, groove form was highest (39.06%) but the figure of tubercular form was lowest (25%).
Conclusions: There was a low percentage of tubercular form Carabelli, it was showed that the Mongoloid characteristic was dominant on Vietnamese dentition.
