Effect of Fluoride Varnishes Containing Calcium Phosphate on Eroded Enamel

Objectives: Having sufficient levels of calcium, phosphate and fluoride ions in oral cavity is important, So additional calcium and phosphate ions from varnishes may lead to improved remineralization. The aims of study to compare the effect of two fluoride varnishes containing calcium phosphate and fluoride varnish on eroded human enamel surface
Methods: Sixty extracted premolars were randomly divided into 4 groups as follows: fluoride varnish containing CPP-ACP (FV-CPP-ACP), fluoride varnish containing XCP (FV-XCP), fluoride varnish (FV), and control group. Specimens were immersed in soft drink and artificial saliva for 10 cycles of 5 seconds each, this procedure was repeated two times at six-hour intervals. After erosive procedure, specimens were applied by each assigned material for 3 minutes and then stored in artificial saliva at 37°C for 6 hours. Vicker microhardness were measured at baseline, after erosion and after remineralization procedures. The mean difference of the surface microhardness were analyzed by one way ANOVA test among the 4 groups at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The statistical significant differences in microhardness were found among four groups (p<0.001). The no significant difference in microhardness between FV-CPP-ACP and FV-XCP (p=0.303). However, there were significant differences between FV-CPP-ACP and FV (p<0.001), and between FV-XCP and FV (p<0.001).
Conclusions: Fluoride varnishes containing calcium phosphate showed the highest significant increase in surface microhardness of enamel followed by fluoride varnish and control groups. Thus, fluoride varnishes containing calcium phosphate could be alternative options for dentist to choose fluoride varnishes used in general application.
