PRF and HA-β TCP Combination in Intrabony Periodontal Defect Management

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical efficacy of autologous platelet rich fibrin (PRF) combined with hydroxyapatite-βTricalcium Phosphate (HA-βTCP) in treatment of two and three-wall intrabony defects caused by periodontitis.
Methods: 19 patients suffering from generalized chronic periodontitis were selected into a random split-mouth clinical trial. Each patient had two identical intrabony defects with at least 5mm pocket depth. Periodontal flap surgery was performed before PRF/HA-βTCP placement in group I while collagen/HA-βTCP one in group II. The clinical parameters, which were probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical loss attachment (CAL), were recorded at baseline, 3 months and 6 months after treatment. Radiographic parameters, which were defects fill (DF), were recorded at baseline and 6 months postoperatively. Paired t-test and Man-Whitney U test were applied in this study.
Results: In both groups, there were significant reductions of probing pocket depth (4.95±1.62 mm group I vs 3.68±1.34 mm group II) and clinical loss attachment gain (4.84±1.35 mm group I vs 2.84±1.02 mm group II) . In comparison, probing pocket depth and clinical loss attachment of group reduced significantly than group II at any time-point. The volumes of defects were significantly filled in both groups after 6 months follow-up (2.94±11.39 mm group I vs 2.55±1.01 mm group II). However, there was no significant difference between 2 groups regarding the volumes (p>0.05).
Conclusions: It was indicated that the combination of platelet rich fibrin and HA-βTCP was more effective than collagen/HA-βTCP in improvement among periodontal clinical signs in periodontitis patients with intrabony defects.
