Camellia sinensis Effects: Malondialdehyde and Catalase Expression in C. albicans-Infected Immunocompromised Wistar Rats
Objectives: To analyze the effect of Camellia sinensis extract towards the expression of tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase in immunocompromised wistar rats infected by C. albicans. Methods: This laboratory experimental research was done using randomized post test only control group design. Each group (n=5) were immunocompromised using dexamethasone and tetracycline (day 1-7), inoculated with C. albicans (day 8; 10; 12). Each group (EGC, ECG, Camellia sinensis) was given (day 15-22) EGC, ECG, & Camellia sinensis extract, consecutively. The expression of tissue MDA and catalase were assessed (immunohistochemistry, reagent: anti-MDA & antibody anti-catalase) and statistically analyzed (ANOVA, Tukey’s, p < 0.05). Results: There were significant differences of tissue MDA and catalase expression in Camellia sinensis group on day four and day seven (p < 0.05) compared with EGCG group, EGC group, and control group. Tissue MDA expression were found to be decreased (mean; day 4 = 7.6; day 7 = 3.4), in contrast catalase expression were found to be increased on day seven (mean; day 4 = 10.4; day 7 = 14.6) Conclusions: There were a decline in expression of tissue MDA and an incline in catalase expression in immunocompromised wistar rats infected by C. albicans which given Camellia sinensis extract.
