Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Analysis of Ocular Prosthesis

Objectives: Prosthetic rehabilitation needs of patients with ocular defects have been recently paid attention in dentistry. However, the basic dimensional parameters of those prostheses are not officially evaluated. This study aimed to (1) analyze ocular-prosthetic dimensions in non-irradiated patients using digital technology for manufacture of stock prosthetic eyes and (2) create a digitized database of ocular prostheses for future refabricating and global research.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on non-irradiated and healthy anophthalmic patients aged above 15 years-old (n=82). Custom-made ocular prostheses were fabricated with heat-polymerized acrylic-resin for all participants. The digital measurement in horizontal, vertical, and anteroposterior (thickness) dimensions with intraoral scanner Trios 3® (3Shape, Denmark), followed by a computed three-dimensional analysis (Ortho Analyzer, 3Shape) were obtained in all samples. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 22.0 version.
Results: An independent t-test showed that a horizontal dimension was significantly greater in males than females (p=0.029), and a thickness dimension was significant difference in surgical techniques, which enucleation technique showed thicker ocular prosthesis compared with evisceration technique (p=0.024). However, one-way ANOVA showed that all dimensions of an ocular prosthesis were not significant differences among age groups (p>0.05). All analyzed dimensions were different in the comparison between subjects with and without undergoing intraorbital implant placement (p<0.01). An average ocular prosthesis has dimensions of 24mm, 23mm, 9mm in horizontal width, vertical height, and thickness, respectively.
Conclusions: This study presented the first set of digitized data for the 3D ocular prosthesis in anophthalmic patients. Gender had an effect on horizontal dimension, surgical technique had an effect on the thickness, whilst implant placement affected on three dimensions of ocular prosthesis.
