Talahib ( Saccharum spontaneum lin) Crude Extract as Sugar Substitute

Objectives: The thrust of the study is to determine the properties of the Talahib crude extract in terms of its phytochemical properties. It seeks to determine if the Talahib crude extract can be use as a sugar substitute and will be compared to the commercially available sugars
Methods: The researchers use 3 sample sugar namely Xylitol, Table sugar and Talahib crude extract.Experimental method was used to extract the flavonoid/alkaloid and sugar content for the root and stem of Saccharum spontaneum lin.
Results: The physical and chemical properties revealed the presence of flavonoid and alkaloids, it has a sweetness of 15.6% as compared to the commercially available sugar which has a sweetness level of 17.2%.
Conclusions: Saccharum spontaneum contains flavonoid/alkaloid content and has a lower sweetness level as compared to commercially available sugar. Thus, Saccharum spontaneum lin can be used as a sugar substitute.
