Fibroblast and Collagen in Proliferation Process after Zinc Oxide with Turmeric Dressing Application
Objectives: To determine the effect of a wound dressing consisting of zinc oxide and turmeric liquid extract on the proliferation process (day 3 and 7) through the fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) expression and collagen thickness on wound healing process.
Methods: Fullthickness excision of 6mm×6mm square was made on the vertebralis thoracis area of thirty wistar rats, prior to be randomly divided into three groups (n=10) based on the following treatment: A group left undressed as control negatif, B group dressed with a combination of zinc oxide and eugenol as control positif, C group dressed with a combination of zinc oxide and turmeric as treatment group. On day 3, half of each group were sacrificed (A3, B3, C3), while the rest were sacrificed on day 7 (A7, B7, C7) to obtain subepithelial excision samples. These samples subsequently underwent mallory trichrome staining to examine the thickness of collagen and immunohistochemistry examination of FGF2 expression to ascertain the proliferation reaction.
Results: The highest expression of FGF2 and collagen thickness were found in the C7 group (p<0,005) to which is significant compared to the rest of the groups. No differences between B3, B7 groups in FGF2 expression and between B3 and C7 groups in collagen thickness.
Conclusions:
The combination of zinc oxide with turmeric liquid extract has a higher proliferation effect than zinc oxide with eugenol as demonstrated by FGF2 expression and collagen thickness. Thus combination zinc oxide turmeric can be used as an alternative to zinc oxide eugenol wound dressings.
