The Correlation of Diets and Oral Hygiene to Periodontal Status

Objectives: The aim of this study was to observed diets and oral hygiene as risk factors for periodontal status of school children living in “Kepulauan Seribu”, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 526 school children (262 boys, 264 girls).
The data “Diets” we collected as how often they eat or drink fresh fruit, biscuits, sweet pies, jam or honey, chewing gum containing sugar, candies, soft drinks, tea with sugar, and coffee with sugar, based on WHO-Oral Health Survey Basic Method questionnaire.
Oral hygiene was assessed using Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S).
Periodontal status was recorded as the number of gum bleeding involved teeth.
Results: The means (SD) of OHI-S in boys and girls were observed as high as 0.65(0.5) and 0.61(0.4) respectively (p=0.79).
Means (SD) of the number of permanent teeth involving gum bleeding in boys and girls were found as high as 5.6(5.7) and 2.4(5.5) respectively (p=0.15).
The results showed that drinking tea with sugar was the only risk factor correlated with periodontal status (Spearman’s Rho correlation coefficient=0.65; p=0.001).
Conclusions: Based on the data it can be concluded that drinking tea with sugar as cultural behavioral among Indonesian children may effect to their periodontal health.
