Clinical Audit of Stainless Steel Crown done by UiTM Undergraduate Students

Objectives: To assess the stainless steel crown (SSC) on primary molars done by the undergraduate dental students at the Paediatric Dentistry Clinic, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).
Methods: 165 paediatric patients aged 3-to-12 years with at least one primary molar restored with stainless steel crown were identified from Paediatric Dentistry from 2007-2015 database. Their records were retrieved and reviewed, and further divided into two groups; i) conventional technique and, ii) Hall's technique.
Results: Eighty-five (51.5%) males and 80 (48.5%) females were involved in this study. 131 SSC were placed using conventional technique and 13 SSC were placed using Hall's technique. 21 records were incomplete or missing. The most commonly used sizes are D5, D6 and E4 with the frequency of 18,18 and 19 respectively. 114 SSC were cemented using glass ionomer (GIC) luting cement and 30 of the SSC were cemented using zinc polycarboxylate cement. The mean age of patient receiving SSC restoration is 7 years old. From the patients' records, it was found that 48.5% (n=80) of the crowns were still intact and in place during the recall visit(s).
Conclusions: SSC has been vastly used for the restoration of primary and permanent posterior teeth since its introduction in 1950. It was reported that no other restoration has the ease of use, reliability, and durability of these full coverage crowns for primary crowns.
The current study found that the conventional technique was the preferred technique of choice, but after the year 2013 Hall's technique slowly gains its popularity. GIC was found to be the cement of choice in cementing the crowns due to its high tensile strength and strong bonds to tooth structure and stainless steel.
