The Effectiveness Test of Avocado Seed Extract (Persea americana Mill) Against Growth of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans
Objectives: To study the effect of avocados seed extract to Candida Albicans dan Streptococcus mutans Methods: Laboratory experimental study with post test only control group design. Avocado seeds powder was macerated with 96% ethanol, and tested using diffusion method with 6 concentrations groups as follows; 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and positive control (nystatin and ampicillin). Each group consist of 4 samples. The inhibition effect analyzed by measuring clear zone around the paper disc. Data were analyzed by Kruskall Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney for Candida Albicans and One-way Anova Test for Streptococcus mutans Results: Inhibition zone diameter for C. albicans with avocados seed extract result are as follow 2% (6.32mm); 4% (6.79mm); 6% (7.43mm); 8% (8.30mm); 10% (8.92 mm), and positive control (19.49mm). Inhibition zone diameter for S. mutans in avocados seed extract result are as follow 2% (11.51 mm); 4% (12.39mm); 6% (13.61mm); 8% (13.53mm); 10% (15.02 mm), and for positif control (7.89 mm). The higher the avocado seed extract concentration the greater the diameter of the clear zone formed. Conclusions: In this study, avocados seed extract (Persea americana Mill) inhibits the growth of Candida Albicans and Streptococcus mutans significantly in concentration 10%. It considered to be bactericidal to both microorganism too.
