A Formula of Cervical Vertebral Bone Age on Cephalometric Radiography From 7 to 18 Years Old
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to establish a formula of cervical vertebral bone age (CVBA) on cephalometric radiography from 7 to 18 years old based on hand-wrist bone age.
Methods: Using lateral cephalometric and hand-wrist radiographs of 180 subjects (91 boys and 89 girls) from 7-18 years old, selected from study group of craniofacial morphology and patients of Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, University of Medicine and Phamacy at Hochiminh city, Vietnam. The cephalometric and hand-wrist radiographies of each subjects were taken at the same time. Eleven hand-wrist skeletal maturity indicators of Fishman were grouped into 5 hand-wrist bone age stages (equivalent to 5 stages in purberty growth: initiation and acceleration stage, transition stage, deceleration stage and completion stage).
Results: A multi-variable regression was established for the correlation amongts 5 stages of hand-wrist bone age and the morphologic characteristics of the second, third and fourth cervical vertebrae. A formula of cervical vertebral bone age was obtained: CVBA= 1.92+ 0.04 * α2 + 0.03 * α4 –1.12*AB3/CB3 + 3.17 * h4/w4 (Stage I: CVBA < 2.55; Stage II:2.55 ≤ CVBA < 3.33; Stage III:3.33≤ CVBA <4.36; Stage IV: 4.36 ≤ CVBA < 5.39; Stage V: CVBA ≥ 5.39 and α2: Anterior concavity angle of inferior border of C2; α4: Anterior concavity angle of inferior border of C4; AB3/BC3: Ratio of inferior and anterior length of C3; h4/w4: Ratio of the middle height and width of C4).
Conclusions: A formula of cervical vertebral bone age on cephalometric radiography can help the orthodontists to determine the patient skeletal age in orthodontic treatment without hand-wrist radiography.
