Oral Health, Nutritional Status, and QoL in Indonesian Older People

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine oral health status (OHS) and masticatory performance of Indonesian independent older people, and their relationship with nutritional status and quality of life (QoL).
Methods: Independent older people living in Jakarta were recruited in 9 public health centers. OHS was clinically examined using DMFT index and periodontal index, masticatory performance was recorded using self-assessed masticatory ability question, classified into one of three categories: ability to chew all kinds of food (Good), ability to chew only slightly hard food (Fair) or ability to chew only soft or pureed food (Poor). The use of denture was also evaluated. Nutritional status was evaluated using anthropometric measurement (BMI) as well as interview using Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). QoL was assessed using Indonesian version of GOHAI questionnaire.
Results: Totally 177 subjects participated in this study. More than half (54.2%) of subjects had 20 or more natural teeth. The mean DMFT index was 13.9 with MT as the main component; 36,7% of subjects had bleeding on probing (BOP); and 50,8% classified their masticatory ability to be ‘Good’. In addition, 38.4% subjects were categorized as at risk of malnutrition. Mean GOHAI score of the subjects was 48.5. It was found that number of natural teeth, DMF-T, MT, self-assessed masticatory ability were significantly correlated with MNA (p<0.05). DMF-T was also significantly correlated with BMI (p<0.05). Number of natural teeth, sound teeth, FT, the use of dentures and GOHAI score were significantly correlated (p<0.05).
Conclusions: There were significant relationships between OHS and masticatory performance, with nutritional status and QoL in Indonesian independent older people.
