Efficacy of Mango Kernel in the Treatment of Plaque-induced Gingivitis
Objectives: The study aimed to determine the effect of mango kernel paste to plaque-induced gingivitis by comparing its effect from a commercial prophylactic paste based on the rate of dental deposit removal and gingival status improvement before and after treatment.
Methods: Six patients with plaque-induced gingivitis underwent oral prophylaxis treatment within three weeks wherein three were treated with commercial prophylactic paste while the other three were treated with mango kernel paste. Oral prophylaxis treatment was done twice a week.
Results: Statistical treatment of data using t-test and ANOVA showed that there was a significant difference in the OHI-S and GI of the patients treated with mango kernel before and after treatment. However, in those patients treated with commercial prophylactic paste, only the OHI-S was significantly improved and not the GI. Also, it was revealed that there is no significant difference between the usage of mango kernel paste and commercial prophylactic paste in terms of rate of dental deposit removal. But, there is a significant difference between the usage of mango kernel paste and commercial prophylactic paste in terms of rate of gingival status improvement. This means that mango kernel and commercial prophylactic paste has the same effect in terms of rate of removal of dental deposits but has different effect in terms of rate of gingival status improvement. These indicate that the use of mango kernel paste has significantly improved the gingival health of the patients with plaque-induced gingivitis as compared to the use of commercial prophylactic paste.
Conclusions: It is therefore recommended to adapt the use of mango kernel paste as an herbal component of oral hygienic products like tooth pastes and mouthwashes to achieve and maintain good gingival health status.
