Healing Effects of Zingiber officinale Root Tincture on Chronic Periodontitis
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the healing effects of Zingiber officinale root tincture in improving clinical attachment level and decreasing tooth mobility degree to provide an effective yet affordable alternative in treating chronic periodontitis due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Methods: This study utilized the Pre-test - post-test experimental design. Purposive sampling was used in choosing the subjects. Since the subjects were allowed to withdraw anytime, only eight out of ten completed the trial. First, consent forms were given to the subjects. Pre-operative and post -operative periodontal assessment of the oral cavity was taken. The researchers provided tincture to the patients that was made from Zingiber officinale to be used as a mouthrinse and as an irrigant during scaling which took place once a week. To test the null hypotheses, t – test at 0.05 level of significance was used.
Results: The obtained mean for the post-test score, 3.55, is lower than the pre-test score, 4.72. The computed t-test value (3.0) is more than the tabular value (t=2.447) at alpha level of .05. The null hypothesis is therefore rejected which indicates that there is an improvement in the Clinical Attachment Level of the teeth involved after the treatment. With regards to tooth mobility, the researchers observed that 48.65% of the teeth that showed a degree of mobility in the pre-test gave a decrease in their degree of mobility after the treatment, 48.65% of the teeth that showed a degree of mobility gave no mobility after the treatment and the remaining 1.49% of the teeth that showed a degree of mobility gave no difference after the treatment. In addition to that, disappearance of halitosis and bleeding upon probing were observed.
Conclusions: The researchers conclude that Zingiber officinale root tincture has healing effects on chronic periodontitis.
