Effect of Alcohol Containing Mouthrinse on Xerostomia: A Randomised Trial

Objectives: Given the higher prevalence of salivary hypofunction and xerostomia in older individuals, this study aimed to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference between alcohol-containing mouthrinses and alcohol-free mouthrinses with regard to xerostomic symptoms experienced by 50-85-year-old xerostomic adults in the short term.
Methods: This study was a two group parallel arm randomised controlled trial where participants were randomly allocated to twice a day use of either alcohol-containing or alcohol-free mouthrinse for seven days. The participants, outcome assessors and statistician were blinded to the group allocation status. After seven days of mouthrinsing, post-experimental Xerostomia Inventory (XI) score was obtained. Compliance with the mouthrinsing regime and amount of mouthrinse remaining were also monitored. Logistic regression was used to determine if there was a difference in change in XI score and change in XI (short) score between the two groups as well as among the top quarter of the participants of the groups with the higher baseline XI (short) score.
Results: 242 individuals aged 50-85 years old were screened. 183 met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled in the study following their consent to participate in the study. Prior to allocation to the groups, 13 of them withdrew. The type of mouthrinse had no significant association with a change in XI score (p=0.36) and change in XI (short) score (p=0.99) after adjusting for confounding variables. The type of mouthrinse also had no significant association with change in XI score (p=0.086) and change in XI (short) score (p=0.39) after adjusting for confounding variables for the top 25% of participants who had higher baseline XI (short) score (≥ 15).
Conclusions: There was no significant difference between alcohol-containing and alcohol-free mouthrinses with regard to xerostomic symptoms in xerostomic elderly adults.
