The prevalence of dental caries and treatment needs between children aged 6-12 years olds by using CAST Index

Objectives: To evaluate the status of dental caries and treatment needs of children 6-12 years old by using CAST Index.
Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out at SDN 03 Lasi , Canduang Agam district, children between 6-12 years were enrolled, resulting the total sampling of 87 children. Caries data were collected by clinical examination based on CAST index. Data analysis include frequency distribution and Mann-Whitney test with p<0,05 (95%CI).
Results: the prevalence of dental caries from 6-12 years old children was 98%, while 60% children were experienced complex dental caries ranging from enamel caries, dentin caries, pulp involvement caries through abcess / fistula condition. Of 60% children needed to maintain their complex caries. Decidui teeth from the children had showed the severity heavier than their permanent teeth, although the prevalence of enamel caries in permanent teeth is higher than decidui teeth (62%). On average each child has 2 teeth with enamel caries and 1(one) teeth with pulp involvement caries. There are no difference in caries status between boys and girls (p>0,05).

Conclusions: CAST index provides informations about oral health profiles, which were ranging from healthy teeth through severity of dental caries ( from enamel caries through to losing teeth due to severe caries), and this index also provide the needs of treatment based on caries severity and the importancy of earlier preventive treatments especially for dental caries.
