A Pilot Study to Assess Oral Health Literacy in Undergradute Students in Indonesia using the HeLD Instrument
Objectives: Oral health literacy is emerging as a new public health challenge and poor oral health literacy is increasingly seen as an important predictor of poor oral health outcomes. As the 4th most populous country, there may be benefits to research in using an instrument to assess oral health literacy in Indonesia. The objective of this research was to develop the Indonesian version of Health Literacy in Dentistry (HeLD) and to investigate oral health literacy in an Indonesian University.
Methods: We translated the HeLD questionniare into Indonesian. The 29 item HeLD scale assesses the components of oral health literacy. The reliability and validity of the seven HeLD domains (Receptivity, Understanding, Support, Economic Barriers, Access, Communication, Utilisation) were evaluated in a convenience sample of undergraduate students of the University of Indonesia. Results: 381 undergraduate students completed the online questionnaire. The mean total HeLD score was 3.3 ± 0.57. Oral health literacy were higher among sudents who were females, were studying in health related fields, and All domains had high internal consistency (Cronbach alpha=0.94). Spearman's correlation coefficients between the seven domain of HeLD scale were (p < 0.001)
Conclusions: The Indonesia version of HeLD appears to be a reliable instrument when used in undergraduate students of a University in Indonesia. Therefor the Indonesian version of HeLD might have potential in measuring oral health literacy among Indonesian-speaking people.
