Effect of Sodium Ascorbate and Epigallocatechin Gallate on the Bond Strength of Composite Resin to Bleached Enamel
Objectives: To evaluate the best effect of application between sodium ascorbate and the newer antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on the shear bond strength of composite resin to bleached enamel. Methods: Thirty five enamel surfaces of maxillary first premolars were randomly divided into 7 groups (n=5). Group 1: Bleaching with hidrogen peroxide 40% and storage in artificial saliva for 2 weeks (control); Group 2-3: Bleaching and soaked in artificial saliva for 5 and 10 minutes. Group 4-5: Bleaching and application of sodium ascorbate for 5 and 10 minutes. Group 6-7: bleaching and application of EGCG for 5 and 10 minutes. Surfaces were etched followed by application of total etch bonding system and composite resin cylinders were bonded. Specimens were tested for shear bond strength. Data was analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (p = 0,05). Results: There was no significant difference between group with different antioxidants application (F = 1,466; p = 0 ,248), but there was significant difference between the different application time of antioxidants group (F = 43,078; p = 0,000). There was no interaction between antioxidant and different application time of shear bond strength (F = 1,916; p = 0,166). All antioxidants used in this study was not effective to neutralized adverse effects of hidrogen peroxide on composite bond strength of enamel immediately after bleaching. Conclusions: A delay two weeks before bonding increased shear bond strength of composite resin to bleached enamel. Application of 5 and 10 minutes sodium ascorbate and EGCG was not effective to increase shear bond strength.
