Unique Risk-habit and Dysplasia-status of OPML in Indonesia Selected Area

Objectives: To describe the possibility correlation between risk habit and dysplasia changes of oral premalignant lesion in Bajawa, East Indonesia
Methods: Cross sectional study was done after ethical approval received. Oral premalignant lesion (OPML) sample were included after being calibrated by two oral medicine specialists. Sociodemographic and risk habit data were documented using validated questionnaire. All suspected clinically as a OPML were biopsied and dysplasia grading was determined by two oral pathologists
Results: Out of 192 subjects, 68 subjects have oral lesions. OPML (erytroplakia, lichen planus erosive, leukoplakia and submucous fibrosis) were found in 15 subjects (7.8%), oral carcinoma in 4 subjects (2.08%). OPML age distribution was ranging from 40 to 74 years old, predominantly in women (2:1). All of 15 OPML subjects were betel quid chewer, 86.6% (13 subjects) were alcohol (traditional) drinker and only 13.3% (2 subjects) were kretek smokers. Out of 15 OPML subjects, 7 subjects (46.6%) were biopsied and all detected having dysplasia histopathologically
Conclusions: Betel quid chewing and traditional alcohol drinking (called as moke) are common risk habits among East Indonesia (Soa and Bajawa) population. These habits possibly correlated to the status of dysplasia in their oral premalignant lesion, and it may cause the development of oral cancer easier
