The Effect of Bisphosphonate Risedronate per Oral in Orthodontic Relapse

Objectives: The aim of this research was to find the differences of the number of osteoblast and osteoclast in dental relapse after given bisphosphonate risedronate per oral.
Methods: Research subject consist of 30 rabbits which inclusion the criteria. All subjects were divided onto 5 groups. Group 1 was the controlled group which was not given bisphosphonate risedronate. Group 2 was given bisphosphonate risedronateper oral 0,025 mg dosage, group 3 with 0,05 mg dosage, group 4 with 0,75 mg dosage and group 5 with 1 mg dosage. Orthodontic appliances were put on the upper incisivus, shaped as bonding cleat and opencoil spring for about 21 days, so it could made interincisivus gap as the first gap. Those orthodontic appliances were released after opencoil spring had reached the maximum gap. Due on the 21th days the subjects started to gave bisphosphonate risedronate per oral for each group based on the dosages for 7 days continously. The number of osteoblast and osteoclast before and after using orthodontic appliances were observed under light microscope for all groups. The collected data were analyzed using Variance Anava (Anava) to determined the differences between controled group and others. Post Hoc test was used to determined the difference effect of each bisphosphonate risedronate wich given orally.
Results: Research results have showed that bisphosphonate risedronate per oral affected to avoid dental relapse of rabbits teeth after moved by orthodotontic appliances. There were significant differences on the number of osteoblast and osteoclast between controlled group and other groups (p<0,05).
Conclusions: Bisphosphonate risedronate per oral could inhibit osteoclast formation. Minimum dosage of biphosphonate risedronate per oral to avoid dental relapse was 0,50 mg and more effective on 1 mg dosage.
