Objectives: Our study aimed to determine the differences in dental and oral hygiene 12 years old students of SDN Benowo 3 Surabaya, among students who do not consume (rinse) the water, and consume (rinse) the water, after they eat snacks.
Methods: This study was a quasi experiment, with the model of pretest-posttest control group design conducted in one day, using the blind method. The sampling technique among 105 students used was the random sampling technique. We divided into three small groups. Each group consisted of 12 students, with a total sample of 36 students. The first group was the control group. While the second and the third group was treated groups (eating-drinking groups and eating-rinsing and drinking groups). The data obtained was processed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 17 and the statistical tests, analyzed by One Way ANOVA.
Results: This study found that the average value of Debris Index (DI) group not consuming water was 1.48, the group consuming water was -0.22, and those who consume water while rinsing was -0.43. The significance between three groups using the Post Hoc Test (Multiple Comparisons) showed that the eating groups compared with eating- drinking groups had p<0.001, the significance between eating group compared with eating-rinsing and drinking groups had p<0.001, the significance of eating-drinking groups compared with eating-rinsing and drinking had p=0.498. It could be stated that there were significant differences between the eating groups with eating-drinking groups, as well as eating groups and eating-rinse and drinking group. However, no significant differences were found between groups eating-drinking groups with eating-rinse and drinking groups.
Conclusions: The Groups that consume water has better level of oral hygiene than the group that do not consume water.
