Effect of Mangosteen Pericarp Extract in Swiss webster Mice Palate Development

Objectives: Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is one of the Indonesian medicinal plants that used to cure various kinds of diseases. Anti-cancer, induction of apoptotic, and anti-proliferative properties of mangosteen xanthones were examined largely. Mangosteen has numerous nutrients that can supply the maternal nutrient. However, there was no furthermore safety research for mangosteen intake during pregnancy.
Methods: The method used in this study is a laboratory experimental study with Completely Randomized Design. This study used 4 male mice and 4 female mice that copulated until female mice pregnant. The pregnant female mice were given with mangosteen pericarp extract (Garcinia mangostana L.) orally with gradual dosage that is 4 mg/0,5 mL, 8 mg/0,5 mL, and 12 mg/0,5 mL in 12th day pregnancy while the control was given with CMC 0,5 mL orally. The surgery carried in 20th day for giving the fetus birth, then the fetus lengths were measured and the palate tissue preparation made, later to be observed under the microscope with 1000x magnification.
Results: The cleft in the secondary palate in all groups was not found in this study. However, at 12 mg/0,5 mL dosage, all the fetus died so that dosage termed toxic. In this study were also found body length differences were significantly visible in all groups simultaneously with increasing the mangosteen pericarp extract dosage.
Conclusions: From the study above, we can conclude that mangosteen pericarp extract was not causing cleft palate if taken during pregnancy, but can shorten the mice body length and at 12 mg/0,5 mL dosage can lead to the fetus death.
