Validation Of Malaysia National Oral Survey for Pre School Children 2015 (NOHPS 2015) Instrument
Objectives: To obtain a validated questionnaire for National Oral Health Survey for Preschool Children 2015 (NOHPS 2015).
Methods: The content of the original English questionnaire for NOHPS 2015 was determined by content experts in the National Steering Committee for NOHPS 2015. Only items with more than 2 choices or with Likert scale were validated. The questionnaire was translated into the Malay language using a forward-backward technique. Both the English and Malay language questionnaire were tested on ten preschool teachers for face validity. Items which appeared confusing, redundant or ignored will be recommended to be rephrased, eliminated or reinstated and subsequently administered on 300 preschool teachers. Reliability analysis (Cronbach’s Alpha), validity tests (Principal Component Analysis and Varimax Rotation) and test retest using Kappa/Intra Class Coefficient (ICC) were used to determine the psychometric properties and the consistency of the questionnaire. Results: Only items with more than two (2) choices or with Likert scale were validated. Hence, only 26 items were validated, covering three domains. The results of factor analysis were generally consistent with the expected underlying structure of the questionnaire. The functional well-being items loaded well on all domains (all factor loadings > 0.40). Item Internal Consistency Reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha) for the NOHSA Malay version were 0.411 (Oral Health Practices and Related Behaviours), 0.711 (Perception of Your Role in Promoting Oral Health) and 0.674 (Oral Health Knowledge). For the English version, the Cronbach’s Alpha were 0.327 (Oral Health Practices and Related Behaviours), 0.700 (Perception of Your Role in Promoting Oral Health) and 0.724 (Oral Health Knowledge). Both Version have substantial agreement (0.61-0.80) for Kappa Score and moderate to strong correlation for ICC in test retest phase.
Conclusions: The questionnaire concerned was successfully developed and validated for use in NOHPS 2015, with improvements made to ensure content validity of the questionnaire.
