Prevalence, Severity and Distribution of Dentine Hypersensitivity at HoChiMinh City

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, severity and distribution of DH in adults at HoChiMinh city.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on urban and rural population of HoChiMinh city. In using PPS sampling method, 871 subjects (≥18 years old) with at least 20 teeth satisfied inclusion criteria were selected. DH was clinically diagnosed by applying tactile (50g) and evaporative stimuli (40-65p.s.i, 22±20C), followed the 0-3 scale. The DH initiating factors were also noted by questionnaire. χ², t test and One-way ANOVA were applied to analyzed the data.

Results: Among 871 subjects (346 M, 525 F, mean age 35.9 years), 747 persons were diagnosed as having DH, giving a prevalence figure of 85.8% including 47.4% responded the test stimuli with moderate degree. The difference was significant between different ages (p<0.001) and profession groups (p<0.05), but not significant between male and female or between urban and rural population. The average number of hypersensitive teeth increases by age. When analyzing by tooth types, 10 to 61 percent responded to evaporative and/or to tactile stimuli, lower and upper premolars and the first molars were most commonly affected, upper incisors and second molars were the least. Coldness was the most commonly reported DH initiating factor, with 62.4% subjects claimed discomfort with cold drinks, and 54.1% with cold foods.

Conclusions: DH was common at HoChiMinh city, half of adult population had at least one moderate sensitive tooth. The ages most commonly affected were 40-49. DH was most frequently observed on lower and upper premolars and the first molars, proportionately more teeth are sensitive to evaporative than to tactile stimulation. Cold drinks were the most common initiating factor.
