Effects of Diabetes Mellitus on Gingival Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Patients

Objectives: To understand the effects of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) on the quantity of gMSCs in patients with periodontitis.
Methods: Human gingival tissue samples were collected from nine systemically healthy subjects with periodontitis and eight T2DM subjects with periodontitis. These samples were examined by immunohistochemistry for CD105. Under the microscope at magnification 40X, 3 areas which were most densely populated by gMSC were chosen and quantified. The density of gMSCs was calculated and compared between the two groups.
Results: The density of gMSCs in periodontitis patients with T2DM (27.33 ± 9.10 cells/300µm²) was less than that in systematically healthy periodontitis patients (33.74 ± 4.63 cells/300µm²). The results showed no significant difference (P=0.126).
Conclusions: Added low grade inflammation (T2DM) did not appear to affect the density of gMSCs in subjects with periodontitis.
