Effectiveness of Counseling using Cartoon Videos and Posters on Oral Health Knowledge and Plaque Score

Objectives: Counseling is one of methods often used in dental health education. Elementary school is an ideal age to practice a child’s motor skills, including teeth brushing. Children age 6-8 years old are still influenced by fantasy therefore they absorb knowledge more effectively if modified with story-telling, playing and singing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge on oral health and plaque score between counseling using cartoon videos and posters in children.
Methods: This was an experimental study using pre and post-test group design. The population of this study was elementary students of Al-Musabbihin school, sample was 84 children in grade 1, which was randomly divided into two groups. The first group was given cartoon video and the second posters. Data was analyzed using paired T-Test to observe the knowledge and plaque score before and after counseling, unpaired T-Test was used to observe the difference of effectiveness between cartoon video and posters on knowledge and plaque score.

Results: The result of this study showed significant difference of the knowledge and plaque score before and after using cartoon videos (p=0,000) but didn’t show any significant difference using posters method (p=0,314 and p=0,242). The difference knowledge score of the group that used cartoon videos was 21,09 ± 17,42 while posters by 3,57 ± 17,42. The difference of plaque score of cartoon videos group was 0,56 ± 0,42 , while posters 0,44 ± 0,48. The statistics analysis showed there was significant difference between the two groups (p=0,000).
Conclusions: Dental health education using cartoon videos was more effective than posters.
