Risk Factors For Low OHRQoL In Indonesian aged population
Objectives: To identify oral conditions as risk factors for low OHRQoL in aged population living in City of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Methods: Intraoral examination that consists of oral hygiene (OH), periodontal tissue condition, decay missing filled-teeth (DMFT), number of natural occluding pairs (NOP) of teeth were carried out for 158 subjects (≥60 years). Xerostomia, hyposalivation (volume of saliva<0.1mL/min) and OHRQoL were also determined using Xerostomia Inventory (XI), spitting method and Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) questionnaire, respectively. OHRQoL was classified based on total score of GOHAI (≤50:low, 51-56:moderate, 57-60:high). Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify risk factors for low OHRQoL. Results: Hyposalivation, xerostomia, periodontal pocket, high DMFT, poor OH, NOP≤5 and low OHRQoL were experienced by 40 (25.3%), 94 (59.5%), 41 (25.9%), 113 (71.5%), 44 (27.8%), 116 (73.4%) dan 112 (70.9%) of 158 subjects, respectively. RR and p for hyposalivation, xerostomia, periodontal pocket, high DMFT, poor OH and NOP≤5 were 1.573 (CI 0.681-3.63; p=0.287), 2.532 (CI 1.255-5.108; p=0.009), 0.846 (CI 0.391-1.830; p=0.671), 1.759 (CI 0.843-3.670; p=0.130), 1.133 (CI 0.522-2.461; p=0.752) and 2.723 (CI 1.293-5.734; p=0.007), respectively. Multivariate test showed that xerostomia, DMFT and NOP≤5 had RR=2.364 (CI 1.155-4.841), RR=1.034 (CI 0.407-2.630) and RR=2.527 (CI 1.181-5.410), respectively. Conclusions: This study suggests that xerostomia and NOP≤5 are risk factors for occurrence of low OHRQoL for aged population living in City of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
