Saluyot (Corchorus olitorius) As An Anti-microbial Denture Adhesive
Objectives: Dentures are used to replace loss tooth structure to improve the quality of life of an edentulous patient.Several problems arises in wearing dentures. Speech and mastication are functions mostly compromised for denture wearers. Denture adhesive is prescribed to address these problems. It help reduce the displacement of dentures during function. It provides sense of a security and confidence for patient. Current issue on zinc toxicity caused by excessive zinc content on denture adhesives prompted the researchers to look for a natural product that can serve as denture adhesive. Saluyot, a herbaceous vine, exhibits slimy and sticky consistency. It contains tannin, chemical components that exhibit antimicrobial property. Objective: to determine the adhesive and antimicrobial property of Saluyot extract and compare it with the commercial denture adhesive. Methods: Experimental. 5 maxillary denture base were constructed and seated on an upper cast. Three groups; Group A (without denture adhesive) Group B (with Saluyot extract) Group C (with commercial denture adhesive) each groups composed of 5 denture base sample were subjected to different calibrated weights to test the adhesion of denture base to upper cast. The test for each group was repeated 3 times and averaged. The adhesiveness is measured based on the average weight that would dislodge the denture base. Antimicrobial property is tested based on the zone of inhibition of S. aureus (UPCC 1143) and E. coli (UPCC 1195) .The 70%, 50%, 30% concentration of Saluyot extract and commercial adhesive were tested for antimicrobial property. Results: Adhesive Test: Denture was dislodged at 80grams (Group A), 150grams (Group B), 140grams (GroupC). Antimicrobial property: Zone of inhibition for S. aureus was 50mm (70% and 50% concentration) and 47mm (30% concentration); E. coli thinning of growth at 30mm diameter zone in all concentration. Conclusions: Saluyot extract may be an effective denture adhesive with an antimicrobial property.
