Katuray (Sesbania grandiflora) Bark Extract As Oral Paint For Ulcers

Objectives: One of the most common mouth problems that society experiences and suffers is mouth ulcer, also known as Aphthous ulcer or Canker sore. This condition occurs in association with many diseases and different mechanisms such as mechanical and tissue injuries, stress, hormonal changes which eventually leads from mild to excruciating discomfort. There are few known commercially available remedies and is often synthetic in nature. This led the researchers to develop a natural product that can be a potential medicament for mouth ulcers. Combination of astringent and antimicrobial property aid in the treatment of mouth ulcers thus, enhancing the overall wound healing process.

To determine the effectiveness of Katuray bark extract as a potential remedy for mouth ulcers with elevated astringent and antimicrobial property.
Methods: Experimental method was utilized. 30%, 50% and 70%concentrations of the extract were tested on the sample of cultured bacteria. Zone of inhibition for antimicrobial property were recorded and documented. Laboratory protocols were submitted to and approved by International Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and strict compliance of the protocols were observed in the conduct of the study. 15 male Sprague Dawley rats were grouped into (positive control (Dequalinium chloride), negative control, and 30%, 50% and 70% concentration) with 3 rats per group. Incisions were made on the labial mucosa of lower lip.
Results: 70% semi purified extract of Katuray bark was found to be significantly better than the positive control, 30% and 50% extract solutions and negative control group as based on all the five parameters of wound healing that were evaluated in the study in terms of inflammation, granulation or fibroblast infiltration, re-epithelialization, neovascularization and collagen deposition.
Conclusions: Katuray bark extract has an astringent and antimicrobial property and can be used as an effective oral paint for ulcers.
