Effects of mouth rinsing and tongue cleaning on volatile sulfur compounds
Objectives:
The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of mouth rinsing and tongue cleaning on volatile sulfur compounds.
Methods: Thirty male volunteer participants were randomly assigned into two groups. Group A (n=15) used chlorine dioxide (ClO2) mouth rinse and group B (n=15) performed tongue cleaning for three consecutive weeks. At the baseline, number of present teeth, DMFT, area of tongue coating, bleeding on probing, debris index and saliva characteristics (flow rate and pH) were examined. Concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs, ng/10mL): hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) and dimethyl sulfide ((CH3)2S) were measured with Oral Chroma ™ at baseline and after three weeks.
Results: 1. At baseline, there were no significant differences in all study variables between two groups. After three weeks, significant reductions were observed in area of tongue coating in both mouth rinsing and tongue cleaning groups.
2. In mouth rinsing group, H2S concentration was significantly decreased from 2.09±2.00 at the baseline to 1.01±0.83 after three weeks (p<0.05). CH3SH and (CH3)2S did not show significant reductions from the baseline to three weeks later: 0.52±0.72 to 0.48±0.39 in CH3SH and 0.22±0.34 to 0.36±0.35 in (CH3)2S.
3. Similar trend were observed in tongue cleaning group, H2S concentration was significantly decreased from 3.44±2.61 at the baseline to 1.97±1.34 after three weeks (p<0.05). CH3SH and (CH3)2S did not show significant reductions from the baseline to three weeks later: 0.67±0.53 to 0.53±0.38 in CH3SH and 0.35±0.31 to 0.34±0.33 in (CH3)2S.
Conclusions: Both mouth rinsing and tongue cleaning significantly decreased H2S concentration, but no significant difference in changes between CH3SH and (CH3)2S.
