Relationship Between Vertical Facial Dimension and Dental-arch Width in Deutromalay
Objectives: To analyze the relationship between vertical facial dimension and dental arch width in Deutromalay race group.
Methods: Lateral cephalograms and study models were obtained from 74 untreated Deutromalay (37 males, 37 females) aged over 21 years with class I molar relationship, no crowding and spacing. Vertical facial dimension is determined by measuring the angle between anterior cranial base (SN) and mandibular plane (MP) on cephalograms. Study models were used to obtain dental measurements i.e. maxillary and mandibular intercanine, interpremolar, and intermolar widths. Dental arch widths of male and female subjects were analysed and the differences between them were tested using independent t-test. Pearson correlation test was used to analyze the relationship between vertical facial dimension and dental arch width.
Results: There are significant differences (p<0.05) between the average value of maxillary and mandibular dental arch width in male and female groups. In male group, significant inverse relationships (p<0.05) were reported between vertical facial dimension and maxillary and mandibular dental arch width, except for mandibular intermolar. In female group, significant inverse relationships (p<0.05) were reported between vertical facial dimension and maxillary and mandibular dental arch width, except for mandibular intercanine.
Conclusions: There is significant inverse relationship between vertical facial dimension and dental arch width in Deutromalay race group, as vertical facial dimension increased, arch width tended to decrease.
