Willingness-to-pay For Caries Risk Assessment And Its Correlates Among Residents Of Singapore

Objectives: Investigate willingness-to-pay (WTP) for Caries Risk Assessment (CRA) and its correlates among Singapore residents. 1. Investigate how lay people perceived value of CRA through their WTP for it. 2. Compare correlates of WTP for CRA and how it affected individuals’ WTP.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 249 Singapore residents, 21-75 years old. Participants completed a 2-part self-administered questionnaire. Part 1 consisted of questions regarding general information of participants, spending characteristics, feelings related to dentistry (Affect) and behaviours. Part 2 consisted of information regarding CRA and its benefits and costs. Participants’ WTP were gathered (Shuffled-Payment-Card-System), bivariate and multi-variable analyses were carried out.
Results: Mean WTP was SGD$108.41(+ SD 91.16). There was a statistically significant difference in WTP for father’s highest level of education (p=0.009), change in spending ability in the last 6-12 months (p=0.03), discretionary spending for one session of dental cleaning (p=0.03), visiting the doctor for flu (p=0.02) and travelling from Orchard to Changi (p=0.02). Males had lower WTP (mean ratio:0.92)(95%CI:0.89-0.94); Older individuals had lower WTP (mean ratio:0.99)(95%CI:0.991-0.993), with a 1% decrease in WTP with an increase of 1 year in age. The bracket of $500-$1500 in discretionary income has lower WTP for CRA (mean ratio:0.95)(95%CI:0.92-0.97) and those above $1500 had higher WTP (mean ratio:1.07)(95% CI:1.01-1.12). Comparing change in discretionary incomes in the past 6-12 months, those with no change (mean ratio:1.22)(95%CI:1.17-1.27) and an increase in discretionary spending (mean ratio:1.37)(95% CI:1.31-1.43) had higher WTP.
Conclusions: 1. Average WTP for CRA was SGD$108.41(+ SD 91.16). 2. Males, older participants, participants with discretionary income between $500-$1500, and higher affect score had lower WTP for CRA.
