What is the optimal angle and distance to grit-blast Zirconia?
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate geometrical effects of sandblasting that could improve resin-zirconia adhesion. Methods: Forty densely sintered zirconia specimens with size 10x10x1.75-mm were prepared. Then, they were grit-blasted at various distance (5-mm, 10-mm and 15-mm) and angles (45º, 60º, 75º and 90º) using Rocatec Pre sand at 3.5bar for 15s. After that, each specimen were cleansed with water and ethanol, air-dried overnight, and then underwent a silane primer application (RelyX, 3M ESPE). Finally, resin composite (RelyX Unicem Aplicap, 3M ESPE) were bonded onto these surfaces in stub form using a plastic mould (Dia ~3.6-mm × 2-mm). Shear-mode adhesive strength (i.e. bond strength) and surface roughness were evaluated. SEM and EDX analysis were used to observe surface properties. Results were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Turkey test (α=0.05). Results: Grit-blasting successfully roughen the hard sintered zirconia surface. EDX analysis at the surface revealed elements carbon, oxygen, silicon, aluminum, and zirconia on the surface after grit-blasting. The overal ranking for resin-zirconia adhesion was found to be grit-blasted at 75º > 45º > 90º > 60º . However, no statistical significant difference were found for 45º, 75º and 90º . Varying the distance between the sandblasting wand and zirconia at 5-15mm did not statistically influence the adhesion. Despite highest surface roughness (0.81 μm) was found at 5-mm and 90º grit-blasting, it does not correspond to yield a higher bond strength. Conclusions: Grit-blasting at various angles contribute differences in surface roughness and surface chemistry, and 75o angle in 5-15mm distance could yield a higher adhesive strength for resin-to-zirconia bonding.
