Effect of Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Swim Bladder Collagen on Healing of Extraction Wound

Objectives: This study aims to determine the effect of the catfish swim bladder collagen in wound healing of experimental animals, which may be of help in the practice of Dentistry.
Methods: Mandibular first molars were extracted from 24 Sprague Dawley rats. 12 extraction wounds were packed with swim bladder collagen particles obtained from catfish. The remaining 12 extraction wounds were used as control. Specimens were collected on the 4th, 7th, and 14th day. Data analysis was done using Stata 12. Comparison of histopathological findings between control and experimental groups were done using T-test.
Results: The control group has a significantly higher mean inflammatory cell infiltration than experimental group (3.87 vs 3.33, p=0.0466<0.05). However, after 7th day and 14th day, both the control and experimental group had no significant difference of inflammatory cell infiltration. Certainly at 4th day, experimental group had higher mean fibroblast proliferation than control group (2.50 vs 1.50). Relatively but statistically not significant (p>0.05), there were also higher mean fibroblast proliferation among experimental than control group by 1.17 times after 7th day (2.50 vs 2.13) and 1.74 times after 14th day (2.83 vs 1.63). Both the control and experimental group had similar degree of epithelialization after 4th day. Though not significant (p>0.05), there was a numerically higher degree of epithelialization among experimental than control group after 7th day. After 14th day, control has relatively higher degree of epithelialization than experimental group (P=0.7506>0.05)
Conclusions: There is a significant effect on inflammatory cell infiltration and fibroblast proliferation on the 4th day between the experimental and control group. Certainly, there is a potential effect on inflammatory cell infiltration, fibroblast proliferation, and epithelialization on the 7th and 14th day between the experimental and control group.
