Comparison of patient-centered outcomes after routine implant, teeth extraction and periodontal surgical procedures
Objectives: To compare patient outcome assessments (POAs) over a two weeks period after five categories of dental surgical procedures
Methods: Total 339 patients in need of dentoalveolar surgical procedures such as simple tooth extraction (SE), transalveolar extraction (TE), straightforward implant placement (I), implant placement with GBR (IGBR), periodontal surgery (PS) in Hong Kong (51.3%) and NanJing Dental Clinic were consecutively recruited (2013-2015). POAs on bleeding, swelling, pain and bruising were obtained using 0-10 Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) on each day of the first week and the 14th day post-surgery. Clinical examinations were recorded on the 7th day post-operation.

Results: Repeated ANOVA showed bleeding, swelling, pain and bruising for all groups reduced over time (P < 0.001). Area-under-the-curve (AUC) analyses for the overall VAS scores of five groups were significant different among four POAs (Bleeding, Swelling and Bruising: P<0.001; Pain: P=0.005). Multiple comparison of AUC found bleeding and pain scores are highest in TE group (Media=4.7 and 8.3 respectively), while swelling and bruising scores are highest in IGBR group (Media=16.75 and 2.55 respectively). Prevalence for complications 1-week post-operatively were SE (4.8%), TE (1.5%), I (12.7%), IGBR (20%), PS (15.6%) respectively. Spontaneous bleeding and suppuration occurred rarely.
Conclusions: The VAS scores for all POAs parameters were generally low and decreased to nearly zero over the study period following all five surgical procedures. Except pain, surgery type influenced bleeding, swelling and bruising parameters significantly. Low prevalence of post-surgical complications was reported.
