Survey of Endodontic Techniques Used by South African Dentists

Objectives: To determine whether or not South African practitioners adhered to accepted endodontic quality assurance guidelines. To assess whether South African dentists keep abreast with current endodontic trends. To evaluate the need for post-graduate endodontic teaching programmes in South Africa. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to 1367 members of The South African Dental Association (SADA) via electronic mail. The questionnaire focused on demographics as well as materials and techniques used in endodontic treatment. The data were received via e-mail and recorded in spreadsheet format. Results: The response rate was poor (13%) and only 111 replies could be used. The majority of the respondents had more than 5 years experience and treated all teeth except third molars. Half the respondents used a rubber dam, which is favourable relative to the global practice of endodontics. The majority use engine-driven instruments for canal preparation. All the respondents indicated the use of radiographs as an aid. Lateral condensation with Gutta Percha was the preferred choices for canal obturation. The majority of respondents performed single-visit treatment with varying frequencies. Conclusion: South African dentists do adhere to most international and current standards. Quality assurance guidelines for endodontic treatment should, however, be developed in South Africa and for developing countries.
