The Anatomic Distribution of Impacted Teeth and Associated Pathological Conditions

Objectives: Tooth impaction is presently being diagnosed more often than in the past fifteen years (Stephens et al., 1989). The cost of treatment of impactions and their complications is high (Friedman, 1983). The aim of the study is to determine the anatomic distribution and pathologic conditions associated with impacted teeth.

Methods: Data obtained from files of patients who visited the department of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery at Medunsa Oral Health Centre between 1st January 2004 and 31st December 2005 for surgical removal of impacted teeth was analysed retrospectively.

Results: Out of 306 patients, 698 teeth were found to be impacted. Seventy percent of those impacted teeth were mandibular, while 30% were maxillary. Two odontogenic cysts were found. Fifteen percent of impactions were associated with sepsis.

Conclusion: Mandibular impactions are more common. The most common pathological condition associated with impacted teeth was sepsis.
