Micro leakage of teeth root filled with GP or Resilon
OBJECTIVE: The objective of endodontic obturation is to provide a complete seal along the length of the root canal. Advances in dentine bonding have led to the development of composite resin root filling materials, such as Resilon. The aim of this study was to compare the micro-leakage of a root canal filled with Resilon to that of a root canal filled with GP utilizing Cold Lateral condensation or System B by means of a Dye Penetration and Bacterial Micro-leakage models. METHOD: The canals of 110 intact single canal teeth were prepared with rotary Profile instruments. Four experimental groups as well as a positive and a negative control group were included. Group one was obturated with GP using System B, Group two was obturated with Resilon using System B. Group three was obturated with GP using a cold lateral condensation technique. Group four was obturated with Resilon using a cold lateral condensation technique. Micro-leakage was determined using a two-chamber bacterial method as well as a Dye Penetration test. Data was subjected to statistical analysis using the Chi-squared test where time, and depth of penetration, was compared using an ANOVA. A p-value < 0.05 was considered as significant. RESULTS: The Bacterial Micro-leakage test showed no significant difference between GP and Resilon when using Cold Lateral condensation (p=0.2695 ) or System B (p=0.5602).The Dye penetration test also showed no significant difference between GP and Resilon using either the Cold Lateral condensation (p=0.2713) or the System B techniques (p=0.0767). CONCLUSION: GP can still be recommended as an effective root canal filling material. The System B obturation technique was relatively unsuccessful, irrespective of whether GP or Resilon was used as the filling material. This research was made possible by funding by the Pameijer fellowship.
