Community perceptions on factors influencing allopathic oral health seeking behaviour
Abstract Oral health is included in the Primary Healthcare Package for South Africa. In Randfontein's ML. Pessen local clinic, a common pattern appears to be delays before consulting oral health service providers although these services are cost-free. More dental extractions than restorations were recorded over the past years The purpose of the proposed study was to gather information that can be used to improve oral health services in the South African district of Randfontein. The aim of the study was to gain an understanding of factors that influence the choice of oral health seeking as perceived by residents in Randfontein Objectives: 1. To explore factors influencing oral health seeking 2. To explore the impact of these factors 3. To use information gathered to improve oral health delivery services Method: The study design: Descriptive qualitative approach. The study population comprised all residents of Randfontein above seventeen years old who visited the M.L. Pessen Clinic oral health section. Six focus group discussions from three different residential areas were conducted. Data collected was analysed during the data collection stage and thereafter. The accuracy of the interpretation of what respondents said was confirmed with them. Themes were analysed, coded and categorized to interpret them for final reporting. Appropriate ethical procedures were followed throughout the research process. Results: Respondents indicated preference for allopathic oral health seeking however barriers were mentioned. Poor staff attitudes, communication gaps, client's personal commitments, transport costs, fear, anxiety and lack of knowledge about oral health issues were such barriers. Conclusion: Preference for allopathic dentistry was indicated by all respondents in the different focus groups. Barriers to oral health seeking were common and therefore should be addressed uniformly. Workshops and staff motivation strategies intended to improve communication and service delivery are recommended.
