A comparison of conventional root canal sealers with ones that use green synthesized nanoparticles for antimicrobial activity: A systematic review protocol.

Objectives: Root canal failure and secondary endodontic infection are prevalent clinical scenarios within the dentistry field. Persistent microorganisms, specifically Enterococcus faecalis, Candida albicans, and Staphylococcus aureus have been identified as the main microorganisms contributing to root canal treatment failure. Over the last decade, researchers have explored alternative antimicrobial root canal sealers. Nanomaterials have emerged as a promising application to endodontic materials due to their unique antimicrobial properties. In the current study, a systematic review will be conducted to compare the antimicrobial properties of conventional root canal sealers to those incorporating green synthesized nanoparticles
Methods: The established protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021286373). The ethical approval was obtained from the Biomedical Research and Ethics Committee at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) (BM22/1/4). The methods will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). A predetermined selection criterion and a well-developed search strategy using the medical subject subheading (MeSH) will be used. The search string will be used across different databases (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, and Wiley). Two independent authors will review the studies' title, abstract, and full text, as well as data extraction. Then, a critical appraisal of the selected studies using a quality assessment tool for laboratory studies will be completed.
Results: Will involve the identification and data extraction from the most recent laboratory studies. If possible, a meta-analysis will be conducted. Alternatively, a narrative presentation of the findings will be presented.
Conclusions: The application of green synthesized nanoparticles in endodontic therapy is a relatively new area.
