Dental management considerations for young patients with oligodontia
Objectives: Oligodontia, characterized by the absence of six or more permanent teeth (excluding third molars), can significantly impact the oral health-related quality of life in affected individuals. Oligodontia may occur as an isolated anomaly or as part of a syndrome and is commonly associated with ectodermal dysplasia. This case series presents three young patients, aged 8 to 15 years, diagnosed with oligodontia, each requiring distinct management approaches based on the severity of their condition and treatment preferences. Methods: After evaluating the treatment needs, the two younger patients were provided with removal partial dentures (RPD). The older patient received RPD, tooth shape re-contouring and is undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment as part of a multidisciplinary approach. Results: Due to the challenges posed by erupting teeth, limited teeth for prosthesis retention, rapid growth, and potential poor compliance in children, the dental management of oligodontia necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. A tailored care path with regular evaluations is fundamental to addressing individual needs effectively. Long-term management is imperative to adapt to the evolving requirements of these patients. Conclusions: The effect of oligodontia on speech, mastication, and aesthetics highlights the significance of appropriate and personalized patient management. This case series underscores the importance of individualized care to ensure optimal oral health-related quality of life for young patients with oligodontia. By addressing their unique needs and preferences, we can enhance their overall well-being and support their dental health in the long term.
