Knowledge and Management of Denture Stomatitis by Dental and Oral Hygiene Students at a Tertiary Hospital.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the knowledge and diagnostic ability of dental and oral hygiene students on denture stomatitis and to determine the students’ management of the oral condition.
Methods: An online survey was distributed to the 3rd to 5th year dental students as well as 1st – 3rd year oral hygiene students. The questionnaire was distributed to approximately 350 (n) students in total. Students were surveyed regarding their knowledge of denture stomatitis and asked to diagnose and indicate appropriate management of three cases as per images supplied. Additional information was sought around management of denture stomatitis in denture-wearing patients.
Results: The response rate of the survey was 33%. 32.4% of the students indicated that they have previously diagnosed denture stomatitis in a patient whilst 67.6% did not. Less than 50% of the students were able to classify two of three of the cases. In addition, less than 50% of the students were able to prescribe the correct Nystatin dosage for treating denture stomatitis.
Conclusions: Although there is no gold standard for the management of denture stomatitis. Teaching should include a variety of strategies to prevent and treat the condition.
