CETYLPYRIDINIUM CHLORIDE (CPC) + CHLORHEXIDINE (CHX) FOR THE TREATMENT OF HALITOSIS
Objectives: To systematically investigate the efficacy of mouthwashes containing CPC + CHX for the treatment of oral malodour compared to CHX or placebo.
Methods: Pubmed data was searched for English language trials using a pre-specified search strategy until May 2018. Trials were included if: - abstracts were relevant to the topic and were prospective 2-arm (or more) in study design. Trial were excluded if: - subjects of both groups were not followed up the same way; there was a lack of computable data; if CPC +CHX not the primary test agent and/or there was a duplication of data. Individual datasets were extracted from accepted articles. Bias risk in included trials was assessed. Where possible, the weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% Confidence intervals (CI) was calculated for the outcome variables reported (organoleptic scores; volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) measurements) using the Cochrane RevMan 4.2 software.
Results: From the 23 trials identified, four met the inclusion criteria. Data for meta-analysis was available from two trials. In the short term (2 weeks), CPC +CHX mouth rinses were significantly more effective in reducing organoleptic [WMD -0.96 95%CI -1.30, -0.62] and VSC scores [WMD -186.93 95%CI -260.45, -113.41] when compared to placebo respectively. The risk of bias was high in all included trials.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of this meta-analysis, CPC+CHX combination mouth rinses showed significant beneficial effects in reducing oral malodour over a 2 week period.
