Adhesively Retained Auricular Prosthesis: A Case report.

Objectives:
To demonstrate simple, cost effective, and non-invasive clinical and laboratory procedures of fabricating an aesthetically acceptable adhesive retained auricular prosthesis.
The loss or absence of an ear despite the aetiology may have functional as well as aesthetic consequences. The effects could have far reaching implications as they impact on the patient’s psychosocial behaviour. The rehabilitation of these patients presenting at the maxillofacial prosthetics clinic, a unit of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation present a challenging task, especially in the retention of the prostheses. Patient’s preferences over surgical reconstruction and low socio economic background of our patients contraindicates the implantation. An alternative would therefore be to create an adhesively retained silicone auricular prosthesis.

Methods: A rehabilitation outcome of a patient who sought bi- lateral auricular prosthesis for post burn deformity is outlined.
Results: A 30-year-old male patient presented with burns to the hands, face and body in a house fire. Examination revealed bilateral ear deformity with scar formation. Hearing capability was not compromised on both sides. A cost effective, adhesively retained prosthetic reconstruction was decided to fulfil the patient’s desire of aesthetic correction. The reconstruction process involved impression taking, fabricating wax pattern, making the mould and processing the prosthesis.
Conclusions: These prosthesis contribute to the restoration of aesthetic and psychological normalcy. They provide a cost-effective and an acceptable means of camouflage for our patients.
