An unusual case of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour in the anterior mandible - A case report

Objectives: Long – standing odontogenic head and neck tumours can result in significant craniofacial deformity, and present reconstructive challenges post – ablative tumour surgery. A variety of odontogenic neoplasms have been described in the maxillofacial region.
Methods: Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (CEOT), a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm, accounts for approximately 1% of all odontogenic neoplasms. CEOT (also known as Pingborg tumour) is a slow growing, but locally aggressive neoplasm which usually occurs in the posterior mandible. Despite the pathogenesis of this lesion being unclear, various sources for the origin of the cells in this lesion have been proposed.
Results: CEOTs have been reported to occur in both intraosseous and, very rarely, in extra-osseous sites in the maxillofacial region, with three histological variants being described in the literature. The treatment modality has varied with recurrences being reported and a follow up period of at least five years post treatment recommended. Only very rarely has malignant transformation and metastasis been reported.
Conclusions: We present a case of CEOT in a 39 year old black patient who was reconstructed with posterior iliac crest bone graft after the resection of the tumour. This case is of particular interest because of its unusual location in the anterior mandible.
