A Survey of Dentists’ Opinions Regarding Stem Cells in Dentistry

Objectives: Regenerative and stem cell therapy in dentistry is a new field and dentists’ opinions and acceptance of these procedures is important to the success of these procedures in clinical practice.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the level of awareness, attitude and knowledge concerning the therapeutic potential of stem cells in regenerative dentistry among dentists and to determine whether a need exists for additional training in regenerative dentistry.
Methods: A questionnaire on perceptions of the use of stem cells in dentistry was distributed to 140 dentists in private sectors in South Africa. The questionnaire consisted of 3 broad sections: Professional status; opinions and beliefs; and clinical practice. 130 copies were returned anonymously.
Results: The majority of the dentists (90%) did not receive any training on stem cell therapies but many (73%) were interested in attending further training. Almost all participants (95%) will recommend regenerative therapies to their patients. The majority (80%) were willing to save teeth in cell banks for future therapeutic purposes.
Conclusions: . Dentists are supportive of using stem cell and regenerative dental procedures. Dentists are willing to undergo more training in regenerative dentistry. They also felt that it should be included in the undergraduate course.
