Dental Cone Beam CT Use and Interpretation by Israeli Dentists
Objectives: Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) has been introduced to dentistry during the last two decades. It is used for various indications including implants, bone lesions, impacted teeth as well as TMJ and airway. The scan volume often contains more information than the region of interest. The aim of this study was to examine the knowledge and training of dentists in CBCT use and interpretation.. Methods: Anonymous questioners were presented to practitioners; they included questions on the dentist's field of work, experience, CBCT use, indications, and form of output preferred, as well as the use of the scanned data and its interpretation. Furthermore, referral to radiologists for consultation and legal issues were also addressed in the questioners. Results: 250 anonymous questioners were collected during 2015. 70% were male; dentists graduating in Israel (56%), with an average age of 48. 90% of the dentists confirmed referring to CBCT , mostly for implants (76%), or extractions (42%) Other indications (including endodontics or orthodontics) were usually referred by the relevant specialist. Occasionally do any of the dentists refer to radiological consultation or interpretation of all the volume scanned (62% and 22% respectively).Regarding the legal questions addressed, 25% of the repliers left this question blank, and about 75% that did answer, believe that they are responsible for the whole data in the scan and they are exposed to legal claims. Conclusions: This study shows lack of dentists knowledge of both the available information in the scan volume as well as the legal issues pertaining to CBCT use. The growing use of CBCT in dentistry obliges the whole dental community to modify both dental graduation education as well as provide continuing education for graduated dentists.
