The Effect of Three Bleaching Agents on Tooth Color Change and Hypersensitivity
Objectives: To determine the difference in tooth color change and intensity of hypersensitivity using three different bleaching treatments.
Methods: A total of 30 participants were randomly divided into 3 groups (n=10). Bleaching was performed by using in-office agents Dash (Phillips, USA) and Opalescence Boost (Ultradent, USA), with high concentration of hydrogen peroxide (30% and 40%), and prefabricated splints Bite & White (Cavex, Netherlands) with a lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide (6%). The degree of color change was evaluated using spectrophotometer Vita Easyshade Advance 4.0 (Vita Zahnfabrik, Germany) before and immediately after bleaching, and one and six months thereafter. Tooth hypersensitivity was determined using Wong-Baker Scale during bleaching and 6, 12 and 24 hours after the treatment.
Results: Immediately after the bleaching there was a significant change in color (ΔE>3; p<0,001) when using all bleaching agents. One (p<0,001) and six months after bleaching (p<0,001) the color of teeth continued to differ from the one recorded before bleaching. There was considerable differences in the perception of hypersensitivity between the different bleaching methods 6 hours (p<0,001), 12 h (p<0,001) and 24 hours (p=0,015) after bleaching, while there was no significant difference in the perception of the pain (p=0,368) immediately after the bleaching.
Conclusions: All bleaching products were effective in teeth color change and in sustainability reflecting on the obtained results. Dentin hypersensitivity appears independently of the bleaching method, taking in consideration that the greatest degree of hypersensitivity, which decreased with time, was recorded with products with the highest concentration.
