Active Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) Chair-side Test in Different Periodontal Disease and Healthy Implants

Objectives: Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8 is a major destructive collagenase involved in periodontitis. This cross study aimed to investigate a chair-side point of care test (a-MMP-8 GCF/PISF pool safe test) in different periodontal disease and healthy implants.

Methods: 103 individuals were included in this study; 20 with chronic periodontitis (CP), 20 with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP), 21 with gingivitis (G), 20 with healthy implants (I), and 22 classified as healthy (H). Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), plaque index (PI), papilla bleeding index (PBI) were recorded. The results were read based on a color change within 5 minutes.

Results: Full-mouth clinical parameters of CP, GAgP and G groups were higher than I and H groups. The percentage of positive aMMP-8 GCF/PISF pool safe test results was 95% in CP and GAgP, 80,95% in G, 35% in I and 18,18% in H groups. All site specific clinical parameters were positively correlated with the test results (p<0.0001).

Conclusions: Based on the present data, aMMP-8 chair-side test showed promising results in recognition of inflammatory status. aMMP-8 chair-side test could be used as an adjunctive diagnostic tool within conventional clinical methods to detect periodontal status. The test excellently differentiated periodontal health and disease.
